About Costa Vida Mexican Catering

Costa Vida is a Mexican street food and gourmet catering service based at 1242 South Congress Avenue in Austin, Texas. We cook for weddings, corporate events, and private parties, and we've built our menus around formats that work in real rooms with real schedules. This page covers who we are, how we cook, and what you can expect when you book us.

Where we are and what we do

A South Congress kitchen built for events

We're on South Congress, and we cater across the Austin area. Our work is event catering: taco bars, buffets, nacho stations, party trays, and burrito boxes for office lunches. We handle delivery and setup, and full-service catering is available when you want staff on site through the event.

We don't run a restaurant dining room. Everything we cook is built for events, which means the menus are designed to travel, hold temperature, and serve a crowd. That one decision shapes the rest of the way we work: how we pack, how we time the setup, and how long a tray of guacamole can sit on a table before it stops looking like it just came out of the kitchen.

Formats we run

Taco bars and stations

Guests build their own plate at a staffed or self-serve station. Best for receptions and parties where people move around and eat standing up.

How we cook

Street tacos anchor most of our menus: hand-pressed tortillas, slow-cooked meats, fresh toppings, salsa verde, and elote. Hand-pressing tortillas is a deliberate choice. It signals scratch-made preparation, and it tastes different from mass-catered tortillas, especially in street-taco presentations.

From there the menu opens into buffet catering with enchiladas, arroz con pollo, and ceviche, plus build-your-own stations where guests assemble their own plate. Rice and beans, guacamole, and chips round out nearly every spread.

The gap between average and top-tier Mexican catering shows up in three places: the tortillas, the meats, and the toppings.

Our approach to premium versus basic

None of it is exotic. It's a matter of whether someone bothered. We do, and it's the difference between a taco spread that reads as gourmet and one that reads as an afterthought.

Slow-cooked meats

They hold their texture through a two-hour service window. Meat that turns to paste on a warming tray is the clearest sign a spread was cooked for a clock rather than for guests.

Fresh toppings and salsa verde

They don't turn watery on a buffet line. Diced onion, cilantro, and lime are cut close to service so they still taste like themselves an hour in.

Hand-pressed tortillas

They read as crafted rather than generic, and they change the whole texture of a street taco. This is the one detail most catering operations skip.

Why we keep formats flexible

Mexican food works for group service because it can be served in multiple formats: a station, a buffet line, a packaged box. That flexibility is the reason we build menus around the event rather than the other way around.

Weddings and receptions

A room that moves

Cocktail hour, dinner, dancing. We time the station so there's a hot line of food when guests arrive from the ceremony and a second wave when the band takes a break.

Corporate and office

A schedule that doesn't slip

Burrito boxes and tray drop-offs for lunches that have a hard start. Setup is quiet, quick, and out of the way of the meeting that's already running.

Private and home parties

A kitchen you don't have to use

Birthdays, graduations, backyard gatherings. We bring the taco bar in, set it up, and you spend the evening with your guests instead of at the stove.

Dietary needs and menu customization

Mexican food adapts well to dietary needs, which is a real advantage for group catering. Rice and beans, guacamole, salsas, and vegetable fillings cover vegetarian and vegan guests. Corn tortillas handle most gluten-free needs, and we flag which items contain gluten.

Tell us the dietary mix when you book and we'll build it into the menu from the start rather than patch it together on the day. In practice that means a separate bowl and a separate serving spoon for anything that needs one, and a short note on the table so guests don't have to ask.

  • Vegetarian and vegan fillings on every build-your-own station, with their own utensils.
  • Corn tortillas for most gluten-free needs, and we mark the items that contain gluten.
  • Salsa heat served on the side so one tray works for a whole room.

Working with us

What a booking looks like

Every booking starts with a quote request: date, guest count, venue, event length, and dietary mix. Those details let us suggest a format and size the menu without a back-and-forth. You don't need a finalized guest list to start; an estimate is enough for a first quote.

Step one

Send the details

Date, rough guest count, venue, how long the event runs, and any dietary needs. A ballpark headcount is enough to price the first version of the menu.

Step two

Confirm the menu

We suggest a format, size the trays for the room, and settle the details — heat level, serving style, and whether you want staff on site or a drop-off.

Step three

Event day

We plan the setup around your venue and coordinate timing with the other vendors. Full-service catering includes staff on site; drop-off means we deliver, set up, and leave you to it.

Questions we get asked

If your question isn't here, call us at +1-512-555-7423 or send it through the contact page.

Can you cater a wedding without a seated dinner?

Yes. Most of the weddings we cater run as a taco bar or station format, which works with a cocktail-style reception where people stand and move. We time the food to the reception schedule, including a second wave if the party runs long.

How far ahead should I book?

For a wedding or a large corporate event, the earlier the better — weekends go first. For a smaller office lunch or a home party, a shorter lead time is often fine. Send the date and we'll tell you what's realistic.

Do you handle vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free guests?

We do, and it's easiest when you tell us the dietary mix up front. Rice and beans, guacamole, salsas, and vegetable fillings cover vegetarian and vegan guests, corn tortillas handle most gluten-free needs, and we flag which items contain gluten.

Do I need a final headcount to get a quote?

No. An estimate is enough for a first quote. We can size the menu from a ballpark number and refine it as your guest list comes together.

Where can I see the menus?

The catering menus page lists our taco bars, buffets, nacho stations, party trays, and burrito boxes, and the events we cater page shows how those formats fit different rooms.
